A new perspective on software solutions
Software solutions have always been, and continue to be, built from the ground up as point solutions to support specific business processes. When customers ask for new functionality, it is added by modifying the "standard offering" or customising it for individual customers. As time goes by, the solution becomes monolithic and complex, yet it still does not satisfy most customers requirements. This approach is clearly not viable, because:
"A solution can only satisfy some customers all the time (niche), or all customers some of the time (general purpose), but not all customers all the time."
The key issue that needs to be addressed is that different customers have different requirements. These will never be addressed by one off-the-shelf solution. The Datamation approach is therefore to:
This approach of using interoperable modules not only eliminates the overheads of having to process data when moving it between systems (thus slashing costs), but also opens the way for using the data for multiple purposes (extracting more value from the data). This is illustrated in the figure below with the use of the Datamation universal Information Platform (uIP):
